1. I am best known to my teammates for…

Overusing the phrase “What areee thooooseee”

2. My lethal weapon on the netball court is…

Vision of space

3. In my spare time I like to…

Hang out with my 13 years old adorable Maltese and bringing him out for a jog that he cannot handle. HAHA

4. My inspiration to continue to excel in netball comes from…

My teammates, good netball played by various people and knowing that there is always room for improvement.

5. If I could be a celebrity for one day, I would be… And why

Dwayne Johnson!!!! I want to feel how it’s like to be that well-built, to embrace the stares from people on the street, enjoy how intimidated people will get and surprise everyone by being a soft and kind person.

6. My match day preparation includes…

I will ensure that my pre game meal is carbo loaded and eaten about 3 hours before the match. Also, I will watch clips of my previous games to mentally prepare myself. There are also certain must do stretches before I begin the team warm up.

7. If you won 1 million dollars, what would you do with it…

I will probably go really crazy for about a week? But I will make sure I keep it low profile so people like Joanna Toh won’t rob me. Jokes, I will probably use half to sponsor her vet science studies so she will owe me for life and use the other half to start a business.

 8. The thing I look forward to most about Singapore is…

Definitely F O O D!!!!! Carrot cake, chicken rice, Ice kacang, Ayam penyet, laksa, Lor mee, prata and the list goes on....

I am best known to my teammates for… My cute face, my vocal chords and most importantly- my sense of humour. LOL.

My lethal weapon on the netball court is…The way I use my legs to get myself nearer to the post……….. Hmmm….

In my spare time I like to… Catch up on shows (currently halfway through Sherlock and waiting for G.O.T to start airing!) and sing into my portable microphone.

My inspiration to continue to excel in netball comes from… My still-healthy body and competitive nature. I’ll keep going till I know I can’t anymore.

If I could be a celebrity for one day, I would be…. And why... I would rather spend that one day with my family and friends- I hardly have time for them nowadays!

My match day preparation includes… Foam-rolling and relaxing, amongst the usual.

If you won 1 million dollars, what would you do with it… Explore the world with my pokemon-master-lookalike-husband. Parveen thinks he is lying to us all and is actually BROCK- LOL.

The thing I look forward to most about Singapore is… I don’t have an exact answer to this since I’m living here but I know I am grateful for what Singapore has provided for me thus far.

Semi-Final 1: Fier Orcas vs Magic Marlins

This is Fier Orcas’ 2nd M1 Netball Super League (M1 NSL) appearance and their first foray into the semi-finals. The team ended their first M1NSL season without any wins but improved tremendously to make the semis.

Both teams started shakily with Fier Orcas capitalizing on Magic Marlins’ errors to bring the score to 4-1 after 4 minutes before Magic Marlins picking up to level the score at 6-6 after 8 minutes. The play was even between both teams and the quarter ended at 13-15 to the Magic Marlins.

Fier Orcas’s Tau Galewa came in as WD replacing Tay Shi Pei while Magic Marlins brought in Tan Zay Hua as C, with both teams mindful of the court time restrictions of the PNG players. The rules state that teams have to play their international players a minimum of 2 quarters and maximum 3 quarters. Kilala Owen was outstanding for Magic Marlins in the circle but the team was let down by several miss passes through the court. Fier Orcas won the quarter and brought the goal difference down to 1 goal at 26-27 to Magic Marlins.

In the 3rd quarter, Fier Orcas made several changes in their line-up, moving Natalie Long to GS, Leah Brokmann to C and Tau Galewa into the circle as GD. Magic Marlins also made a few changes, bringing in Nur Athirah as GA and Nur Khalisah as GD to replace Kilala Owen. With the changes in the shooting circle, Fier Orcas were able to capitalize on the absence of the experienced Owen and the lead changed hands after 6 minutes into the 3rd quarter. With confidence growing through the court Fier Orcas extended their lead to 5 goals, winning the quarter 17-11 to bring the score to 43-38.

Kilala Owens and Pamela Liew came back in for Magic Marlins as GK and GA respectively and Fier Orcas moved Leah Brokmann back to GS and Natalie Long to GK in the 4th quarter. However, Fier Orcas continued with the momentum and stormed into a 10 goal lead 6 minutes into the 4th quarter. The shooting duo of Deborah Rowe and Leah Brokmann remained composed despite the pressure of the match. Fier Orcas won the match 56-44, qualifying for the preliminary final and putting themselves a step closer to the finals.

Mission Mannas go into the semi-finals undefeated in the round games. Mission Mannas beat Tiger Sharks on both occasions, winning 38-36 and 51-35.
Tiger Sharks settled into the game quicker and were leading by 2 goals 6 minutes into the game. However, Mission Mannas proved to be the stronger team once they got into their rhythm and led the first quarter by 14-8.

Both teams are strong defensively and the game was tight, allowing for little mistakes. Mission Mannas finally got the breakthrough with 5 minutes of the quarter remaining and broke away with a 6-goal lead. The 2nd quarter ended 12-6 to Mission Mannas, bringing the score to 26-14.

Tiger Sharks secured finals spot against Mission Mannas

Fier Orcas finished 3rd in their second M1NSL2017 appearance, a huge improvement over last year.

23 April, Toa Payoh Sports Hall – Tiger Sharks booked a spot in the grand final of the M1 Netball Super League (M1 NSL) 2017 by triumphing over Fier Orcas 59-47. They will meet title favourites, Mission Mannas next Saturday, 2pm at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall in bid of the Champions title.

Fier Orcas made history by qualifying for the preliminary final in their 2nd appearance in the M1 NSL. The club team did not register any wins in their first NSL season last year. Finishing 2nd in the round games, Tiger Sharks beat Fier Orcas on both occasions in the round games, winning 58-37 (round 1) and 55-40 (round 2).

The first quarter was a tight affair with both teams taking time to settle into the rhythm of the play. Fier Orcas was leading by 3 goals with 5 minutes remaining before Tiger Sharks caught up and took the quarter 13-11.

Fier Orcas made one change in the 2nd quarter, bringing in Tay Shi Pei at WD to replace Tau Galewa, mindful that the Papua New Guinea international players have to play a minimum of 2 quarters and maximum of 3 quarters. Tiger Sharks tightened their defence in 2nd quarter, forcing errors by the Fier Orcas attackers and stretching the lead to 6 goals after 5 minutes. Tiger Sharks continued to dominate and took the quarter 16-7, putting the half-time score at 29-18.

Fier Orcas made several changes in the 3rd quarter, moving Natalie Long to GS, Leah Brokmann to C, Celeste Lee to WA, bringing in Tau Galewa as GD and moving Reena Rajamohan to GK. Fier Orcas began the 3rd quarter with the first centre pass, but was overturned by the Tiger Sharks. Fier Orcas’ defenders, Reena Rajamohan and Tau Galewa stepped up their game to pressure the Sharks’ shooters and intercepted several balls to put Fier Orcas back into the game, reducing the deficit to 9 goals after 7 minutes. The 3rd quarter ended 42-32 to Tiger Sharks.

Tiger Sharks kept the same line-up through the game while Fier Orcas brought in Jacklyn Lahari as WA and moved Celeste Lee to C. Despite fighting all the way to the end, Fier Orcas were unable to break down Tiger Sharks. Tiger Sharks eventually took the match 59-47, with the shooting duo of Cassandra Soh and Zhang Ailin posting a shooting accuracy of 86%.

Vanessa Lee, Captain of the Tiger Sharks was happy with her team’s performance, “I think we played a very controlled game today. We kept our possession and that was key in us winning the game.”

On how they need to counter the Mission Mannas next week, Vanessa said, “Our bodies are tired after two hard games this weekend. We will have to recover well for the final next Saturday against the Mission Mannas. Against the Mannas, we will need to go back to basics and make sure we cut down on unforced errors. Our game will have to be clinical and precise.”

In the 5th vs 6th playoff, SRC Barracudas came from behind to beat M1 Sunfish 44-39 in a tightly contested game to finish 5th in their first M1 NSL season.

A Division Games

Tampines Junior College (TPJC) vs Serangoon Junior College (SRJC)TPJCvsSRJC

It was a close fight between Tampines Junior College and Serangoon Junior College in the preliminary game of the National A Division Netball Championships.

TPJC led with a score of 7-4 to SRJC during the first quarter. TPJC were showing hard defence against SRJC with interceptions which disrupted SRJ’s attacking flow. SRJC’s performance were a bit lacking due to mistakes from unstable footwork and passes but they were still steadily narrowing the score gap. TPJC were having a better start; the momentum of their play was smooth and their midcourt players were all running in perfect timing.

In the 2nd quarter the whole SRJC team picked up their pace and fought back and were able to improve their flow of play. However, due to the hard defence in the goal circle by the TPJC’s GK and GD from TPJC, SRJC’s attackers struggled to get the ball to their shooters. TPJC were consistent in their shooting and managed to hold on to their lead with the score of 14-10.

Things started to fire up during the third quarter. SRJC went in full force which caught TPJC off guard. SRJC continue to tighten up their defence and managed to break TPJC’s flow of play. With their coach closely mentoring the players, SRJC became more calm and controlled with their play. This enabled them to catch up the score gap. On the other hand, TPJC was panicking and allowed SRJC to have numerous turnovers which SRJC made full use of it. The shooters from SRJC continue to put in the shot every time the ball was in their hands, especially the GS who made many impressive shots from far distance. It became an intense
match as they tied 19-19 at the end of the third quarter.

Tension rose quickly in the last quarter as both teams played with their hearts and displayed fearless defending. However, there were several contact calls made against TPJC which resulted in favor of penalties and turnovers for SRJC. The match was nerve-racking to watch and both teams certainly gave a good fight, In the end, SRJC emerged victorious and won with a score of 27-22 against TPJC.DSC01866444

Captain of SRJC, Joyce Leck, said “We started off shakily as there were many miss passes and our footwork were also unstable, which caused us to panic as we are down for the first two quarters. I think that we can do better for the first quarter.  We had trouble feeding in the ball into the goal circle as the TPJC defenders were very strong. I am glad we picked ourselves up and won the match. Overall, both our teams really wanted it badly as you can see from the close match.”

Mission Mannas crowned Champions of the M1 NSL 2017

Netball Singapore named 24 players for the 2017 National Opens Squad with four new promising players making the squad

29 April –  Mission Mannas triumphed over Tiger Sharks by 57-37 to clinch the title of the M1 Netball Super League (M1 NSL) 2017.  This is Mission Mannas’ 2nd M1NSL title; the last time they won the title was in 2014.

The Tiger Sharks have a uphill task as the team played Mission Mannas three times in the M1 NSL 2017 season and lost all three games, 38-36 (round 1), 51-35 (round 2) and 47-36 (semis).

With the title at stake, most teams started shakily, with several fumbles and miss passes. The first goal was scored by Mission Mannas only after 3 minutes. After the opening goal, Mission Mannas settled and raced to a 4-0 lead before Tiger Sharks’ Zhang Ailin netted the first goal. Mission Mannas were defensively very tight throughout all areas and challenged every single pass, constraining Tiger Sharks’ play. Mission Mannas stormed to a 6 goal lead after 9 minutes and eventually stretching it to 9 goals to put the score at 15-6.

With a 9 goal lead to chase, Tiger Sharks made some changes in the shooting circle, bringing in the 1.96m Chen Li Li as GS and moving Cassandra Soh to GA. Tiger Sharks also stepped up their defence and were chipping away at the goal difference initially. However, the experienced Mission Mannas defenders were able to keep the attackers at bay and the quarter ended 26-17 to the Mission Mannas.

In the 3rd quarter, Mission Mannas brought in Rima Yanti as GA and moved Jocelyn Ng to WA whereas Tiger Sharks replaced Cassandra Soh with Zhang Ailin. Mission Mannas continued with their momentum from the 2nd quarter, playing very well as a unit and stretching the lead further to take the quarter 41-28.

No changes were made to the line-up of both teams. With a 13 lead to overcome, Tiger Sharks continued to work hard.  However, they were no match for the Mission Mannas and Mission Mannas eventually took the game 57-37.

Nurul Baizura Captain of the Tiger Sharks was happy with her team’s performance, “I think our play was very solid at the start and we delivered our game. Coming to 2nd quarter, there were some complacency and our conversion rate at goal was lower. But we picked ourselves up and ended strongly in the 4th quarter with everyone supporting at all positions. Before the game, we told ourselves that as long as we took care of process, the result would take care of itself.  It is good that we didn’t play a trailing game; Tiger Sharks were the ones trailing though the game, so the pressure was lower for us.”

Following the prize presentation, Netball Singapore announced the National 21 & Under team which will be representing Singapore at the Asian Youth Netball Championships in Jeongju, Korea from 6 to 13 May.  The National 21&U team will also be competing in the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana from 8 to 16 July.

The 2017 National Opens Squad consisting of 24 players was also announced. The players were selected following their performances in the M1 Super League League. 14 players from this squad will be traveling to Belfast, North Ireland in June for a training tour in preparation for the 29th SEA Games. Following the tour, 12 players will be selected to represent Singapore at the SEA Games in KL, Malaysia from 14 to 20 August. The National Opens Squad will also compete in the Mission Foods Nations Cup from 3 to 9 December.

Four new players have made the National Opens Squad. They are Low Yi Lun, 28, a speedy midcourt player from the Mission Mannas, Rima Yanti, 25, a strong player who plays as a shooter for the Mission Mannas as well as two young players, 22-year-old Sindhu Nair, a defender and Toh Kai Wei, 21, shooter from the SRC Barracudas.

Yeo Mee Hong commented on the four new players, ”Kai Wei has a lot of potential and she is a fearless playmaker who has performed very well in the  M1 NSL. Yi Lun is a very skilful midcourt player who has very quick footwork. Her feeds are very accurate and the runs are timed well. She was instrumental for the Mission Mannas. Rima has been a training partner with the Opens squad since last year. She is very composed and controlled in her play. Sindhu is young and inexperienced but we thought she has the potential to be trained to be a circle defender for the Opens squad.”

National A Division Netball Championshipsdadaddada

Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC) vs St Andrew Junior College (SAJC)

In the preliminary game of the National A Division Netball Championships, ACJC beat SAJC by 54-27.

SAJC had a nervous start with errors which result in unnecessary turnovers to the ACJC. In comparison, ACJC started well and their shooters put in every shot with confidence from their own centre passes and turnovers. This put them in the lead for the first quarter with the score of 14-5.

Both teams displayed strong defence. In particular, the Goal Keeper (GK) from SAJC was aggressive with belligerent attitude that gained numerous successful interceptions and rebounds. However, the players from SAJC were unable to progress due to ACJC’s interceptions in the centre third. Despite having a petite size, Goal Attack (GA) from ACJC was able to withstand the pressure from the long limbs of the SAJC’s GD and managed to sink in several magnificent shots from far distance. ACJC led the second quarter 27-13.

asasas

SAJC’s attack struggled in the third quarter as ACJC’s defenders were hard on them, following them tightly. Nonetheless, SAJC showed no

fear in their play as they found their momentum back. Although the midcourt players were able to deliver the ball down the court swiftly, the

feeders were unable to get the ball into the goal circle which cause plentiful of turnovers and widening the score gap, 38-22.

Despite trailing, SAJC were not discouraged. They tightened up their defence and were determined to push through regardless of the score difference. The competition on court was intense and both teams certainly gave a good fight but in the end, ACJC emerged as winners with the score of 54-27.

It’s 50 days (18 May) to the Netball World Youth Cup! Joan Yani, Nigel Lim and Yu Bee Ling have been invited to officiate the youth tournament in Gabarone, Botswana from 8th to 16th July.

How does it feel officiating the NWYC now as compared to the last World Youth at Scotland now that you are an IUA?
Yani: Feels exactly how I felt when I first got the invite. Nervous, excited and with extreme trepidation. Being an IUA hasn't changed anything, I think it just comes with more expectations, but I think we're handling these bags of emotions a lot better now.
Bee: Probably more pressurising because the last WYNC (Glasglow) we went in with no experience and a ‘nothing to lose’ mentality. But this time round, we have had more experiences and higher badge level. This obviously mean higher expectations for ourselves and from others.

What do you think will be the biggest challenge?
Yani: Biggest challenge would be to remain as consistent and as calm as I can be. Especially in terms of teams that I have not seen or umpired before. Reading their bodies and understanding their styles of play quickly is essential to ensure I can make the decisions good and well.
Bee: The different style of play from the different teams and being able to adjust to them through the tournament. Unlike teams, we do not have “fixtures” to refer to so our preparation is quite different in the sense that we have to watch every team and know their style of play. In addition, being able to manage the game well from the start to finish.
Nigel: The biggest challenge for me would be to adapt to the environment when I am there as I need time to familiarised myself to the surroundings and particularly my diet.

How is the preparation coming along? How hard do you need to train?
Yani: Preparations are coming along well. The competition is coming really soon, so I have to strike a balance of how heavy I would want to go and whether I should concentrate on my intervals. I think for me personally is how much I need to plan and ensuring that these plans include recovery.
Bee: I have started twice a week session, 1 cardio and 1 strengthening. In June, the training will be extended to thrice a week. Locally, we do not have many high level games to umpire, so it is upon us to keep up with our strength and conditioning work to be in the best possible condition when we are at tournaments.
Nigel: I have been going for regular runs and swim to improve my cardiovascular fitness as well as strengthening my lower body so that my legs can 'tahan' throughout the championships.

What are you looking forward the most and what do you think you can learn from the other umpires?
Yani: I'm looking forward to the games definitely. Being on court to take my first game, that's going to be exciting.
We can definitely learn a lot from each other. it doesn't have to be about umpiring but learning from each other’s' netball culture and finding out how the sport is doing well over there is a big plus for us.
Bee: That will be to meet the umpires and umpire coaches/panels. We do have different ways and styles, so it is always insightful to hear and learn how they deal with different situations on and off court.
Nigel: Definitely looking forward to learn from the other umpire and coaches. Every competition is different and I will always learn something new. Also meeting new friends around the world.

What are you hoping to achieve from NWYC?
Yani: I’m hoping to achieve some umpiring breakthroughs. Maybe learn more about my umpiring by interacting with the different game plays, come out stronger and more confident. Simply put, I’m hoping not to think too much and just go with the flow.
Bee: Besides going into NWYC as an IUA this time round, I think my mentality is pretty much the same. I would like to gain as much experience as I can from the games I will be umpiring as every game is different and a challenge on its own, and will definitely want to add it into my bag of skills.
It will also be great if I could bring these skills and experiences back to contribute to the local umpiring scene, be it umpiring or mentoring the younger ones through their umpiring journey.
Nigel: I am hoping to grow stronger in my umpiring techniques so that I can share my experience and knowledge with the younger umpires back at home

What are you looking forward to do in Botswana during your off day?
Yani: I haven't thought about day offs yet! It'd be nice if we can partake in their culture, it'd be awesome to see their wildlife. The Singaporean in me wants to know more about local food.
Bee: Have not really thought about it yet. Well, Botswana is in South Africa, so a visit to the Game Reserve will be interesting.
Nigel: Is there even a day off? If there is, then it should be touring the city to look for a beach, sitting by the sea and listening and watching K-pop music videos so that I can teach Bee and Yani how to dance

What's on your bucket list in terms of Umpiring achievements/assignments?
Yani: Tough one! My bucket list would maybe umpire a sold out local game at the OCBC Arena, filled with netball fans of all ages! It's mean a total accomplishment in the local netball scene and I'd love to be given an opportunity to umpire such a game
Bee: Of course, it would have to be an appointment for the World Netball Championship and/or Commonwealth Games. (Probably every IUA’s dream)
Nigel: Hmm... The World Netball Championships!
